MAILE( Whispering to Kawe)
So, you’re in the semi finals, and you have the most yards of any quarterback in the state? (looks like shes taking notes)
KAWE
( He whispers back)
I’m a running back…You don’t get out much, Huh?
( He sees a small flower in her hair again…hands it to her…she acts insecure and brushes her hair with her hand to brush off anything else)

JOACHIM
Ok, quiet on set…Hey tell those girls to be quiet…we’re taping here…in 5, 4, 3…..
MAILE
Aloha this is Maile for Red TV. We’re here in Olelo’s studio to
get a chance to know more about the talent behind the number 9.
Kawe Wily.

MAILE
I guess every player in Hawaii wants to be the best, but some how you’re the number one in the state…what is your secret?

KAWE
Secrets? Hmm… (rubs chin and looks off to side as if thinking)

MAILE(pressing)
Well, are you faster, stronger… or are you smarter?

KAWE
Hmmmmm… (thinking) I guess I run fastest …when Im scared. Like, when I was little, I grew up with a bunch of big sisters and cousins man… they were scary, And whenever I got into trouble, I had to run away… a lot…

MAILE (surprised, smiling)
Wow, you must be joking…

KAWE
I wouldn’t joke with you…

MAILE(pauses)
Uh, so do you have any hidden talents?

KAWE ( quiet, humble)
I used to play Ukulele…Yeah, I ah, really like the Uke.

MAILE
Used to?
KAWE
Uh…I don’t play anymore…

MAILE ( she is surprised as he shows his vulnerability or sadness over the Ukulele and is kinda stuck staring at him… suddenly she tries to get rhythm of interview back by looking for Kenny’s question, and reads…sounds like reading”

“ Kawe, so you can run real fast…any idea how you would you use this in a job after football? Like after a scholarship?”

KAWE
( showing he’s a bit annoyed)
Wait…like in a job as a lawyer or a doctor?
MAILE
I mean now…ah, you have a good work ethic…focus…

KAWE
Oh like cause I sack a quarterback I can sack groceries? Or cause I lift weights that I can load a moving van?

MAILE
Oh, im sorry, that’s a bad question… can I-

KAWE
Look, my Polynesian heritage…we were warriors…its in my blood…

MAILE
Ok, right, I understand…

Last question, what advice would you have about being successful in football and in life…that you’re learning?

KAWE ( long pause…staring at Maile pissed)
I learned that other people who don’ t know anything about you will judge you, so…you have to know your own value…don’t worry about what other think about you.
MAILE( a bit nervous)
Great advice…from Kave Wily….So kids remember don’t judge!.. This is Maile for RedTV.

( Kawe unclips his won mic and walks away mad)

__________________________________________________________________
MAILE
I was such a bad reporter …I. wasn’t even prepared.

KAWE

It’s ok, it got me thinking. Thanks

MAILE
But, what you said about your Hawaiian blood…when I dance Hula… well, its not going to be my career…but it does make me happy.

KAWE
That’s cool …( smiles)

( they work quietly, thinking their own thoughts)

You should get your nose of out of the books and learn something about sports!
KAWE (talks to Meg)
Meg, just chill. I’ll talk to you later. We’re trying to weed here.

TEACHER voice
Hey everyone stay with your partners!

MEG
( she walks away mimicking him) We’re trying to weed here.

MAILE
(a little shy/reluctant) She your girl friend?

KAWE

We talk in class sometimes…but I don’t like her stalking me… (he throw weed near some flowers)

MAILE
( Looks where the weeds were thrown. Finds some pretty purple flowers growing wild)

Oh, wow, look, how pretty.

KAWE
( he also sees a small dried flower stuck in her hair)
How do you get these in your hair? ( he takes it out and hands it to her, she is embarrassed)

KAWE
( points to the closed buds)…These flowers haven’t even bloomed…poor little ugly things.. (holds it towards her)

MAILE

(turns towards kawe. Takes off glasses to get a better look at the flower)
Ugly? … Are you blind or something? Even though they haven’t bloomed, look closer…take your time.

(camera focus’ onto the flower and then fades into focus on her face)

KAWE
You’re right…it is… beautiful

(he smiles and pulls the flower down) Hey, why don’t you think about wearing contacts? You’re pretty cute without those glasses. (smiles jokingly)
MAILE

(taken back, but smiles instantly) Oh yeah, well I think you’re pretty cute ……with…. mud on your face!

(Maile picks up some mud from the patch and slaps it onto Kawes face. They starts playing around and fighting with mud (5-10 secs)

* ( as they are staring at each other, you hear someone call Kawe’s name. “Kawe! Catch!” He’s zoned out, he can` ’t hear and the ball hits him upside the head!

MAILE
Whoa, are you ok?
KAWE
Oh, I’m fine…( smiles) but I just got a weird flash back… About people ….judging. ( looks at maile pausing)
MAILE
What?… Hey, if you’re talking about me, I’m sorry that I judged you…

KAWE
Yeah you did…(smiling)

MAILE
Look, I don’t know why I’m telling you this…but I wanted to judge you because I’m afraid… and sometimes, that I am…not good enough…

KAWE (pauses taken back sighing)
Yeah, I guess I work so hard, because… if I do good on the field people will like me…To be honest…It makes me feel a bit…

MAILE (smiles half-heartedly)
Ugly?

KAWE(smiling)
Huh, yeah, I guess…
MAILE

So we’re like those ugly buds, huh?

KAWE
( picks up a bloomed purple flower and gives it to her, smiles…shows the buds)

that’s me…that’s you.

______________________________________________________________
Scene: 10 Still in the taro patch

KAWE

OK, flower girl, now I’m the reporter. I get to interview you.

OK, so… What makes you happy?

MAILE
I don’t like that question…ok, I like things like… today, learning traditional Polynesian values, not Hollywood’s values…( pause)

KAWE
Like, Things money can’t buy?
MAILE
Yeah, things we have to work for that’s healthy… like growing our own food or catching our own fish! (happy, laughs)
KAWE
Oh, Ok, I was gonna call you flower girl, but now I guess you’re mermaid girl. Haha

(both laugh)
KAWE
Now, do you have any hidden talents?
MAILE
Well I told you about my hula…and I like to sing, but I’m not any good.

KAWE
Hey, if you find a song, maybe we can do one for the brown bag talent show!
MAILE
Hey, I told you I’m not any good!
KAWE ( jokingly mocking her)
Awwwe, are you a flower not yet blossomed!
Come on, I need to work on my ukulele skills!

MAILE

( she picks up her back pack and takes out an Ukulele)

OK, you’re asking for it! Look what I have….Hey , try play something!
KAWE ( playing a song)
I started this song a long time ago…need to finish, can you help?

( He laughs and plays a bit of the song he’s going to work on..Flower Gurl…)

(shows Meg and some other girls talking behind them, making faces and pointing at them. Meg looks mean and starts smiling as if making a decision)
___________________________________________________________________________________Scene: 11: Maile walking home after field trip: she gets busted:

( the Ukulele music is still going through her mind as she walks home, flowers in her hair, smiling)

Far in the distance we see a few girls following her home. Its mean girl Meg who follows her to her tent. The mean girls smile when they see she lives in a tent by the beach…
______________________________________________________________________________

Scene: 12: in the morning at school:
Mean Meg and girls whisper something to Kawe, he frowns.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Scene: 13: at school afternoon: Maile gets rained on:

Then later in day its getting overcast. Kawe walking with friends…Maile carrying the Ukulele, she’s all happy and waves to him.
He hears someone else call his name and a football comes to him and he focuses on catching the footall and he does not see Maile.

When Kawe ignores her, Maile’s face falls, and he waving hand goes weak in the air, so she tries to hide the wave and pretends like she was scratching her head… Just then Meg the mean girl and her friends walks by and says…”Oh, you got lice?”

And bumps her into a puddle of muddy water.

It stars to rain…Maile just stand there in the puddle looking down at the mud defeated. The light rain turns to pouring rain. (you hear a few notes of the Ukulele song, then switches to a sad gloomy song )

She is very sad, depressed, drops her books in the puddle, picks them soaping up…the Media scholarship paper falls unnoticed into the muddy water.

She walks dejected the rain leaving the school. When she gets to the place where her tent was there is only a sign there say’s : NO CAMPING WITHOUT A PERMIT!

She finds the tent in a trash can…pulls it out of the trash can along with a half eaten burrito. She eats it and spreads the tent out, and crawls the collapsed tent to sleep.

Scene: 14
The Dream
Cut to KAWE who is dreaming in sepia:

Scene 15: dreaming

Kawe comes out of the water with his spear and a big fish.
Maile is doing a hula. Both are dressed in traditional clothes.
But he’s still wearing his football helmet.
He gives her a beautiful crown lei of flowers.
They come to a grass shack. Kawe stares at it.

(Cute to dream, remembering coach’s talk about bullying)

COACH TORRES
One think I won’t stand for is bullying!
Everyone on this team has value…everyone blossoms at a different time….I don’t want to hear you putting down a team member….he’s your brother…don’t bully
( cut back to grass house)
KAWE
It’s not a house. Its made of grass and flowers… We didn’t need houses or money…we were happy!

Scene: 16 outside morning:
( Kawe wakes with a start, and soon is running frantically to talk to Meg, from a distance she is shaking his head…starts running and then is cut off by his friends. They try to get him to hang out with them, but he gets around them and then continues to run, he runs frantic, before the light of day… we don’t know where he’s running)
______________________________________________________________________

EXT. 17 Beach near sunset
Last scene: a path of rose pedals:

Maile is walking along on the beach. The sun is setting. All of a sudden she sees a few flower pedals. Then it turns into a trail of rose peddles. She follows the trail.

Fade to black.

(Kuyo. “You can’t judge someone’s value or beauty because we are all like flowers some take longer to blossom. Everyone can blossom and be deserving of love attention and value…it’s not fair to trash talk about another person and change the way people look at that person. It takes time for a persons true beauty to blossom and shine.”

NADIA ( looking at camera)

When I first heard that a wind farm was coming to town…I thought back about my
grandfather..

NADIA ( ok to read, in a way that sounds like talking)

How the wind blew before the island were formed…across the ocean…a friend to
the sailor and fisherman.

Grandfather said that there were many names of the wind…as many names as
places it would travel…these names, were passed down to us in chants…

BRYIA ( looking into camera)

The company building the windmills, First Wind, invited my friends and I from

Kahuku’s Film Club to visit the construction.

NADIA ( smiling, happy)

We decided to use our camera as a tool to study how it all worked!

BRYIA ( reading)

Instead of just reading about the science and engineering, we want to experience
in person more about the winds that would be change into our future….

Trip to the wind farm: ( ok to read in a voice over) video shows trip up Charlie rd[ ]

We learned that First Wind had already finished a wind farm in Maui. That after
years of careful study to protect the environment and wild life, they selected

a spot on the North –East part of Oahu known for its steady wind known as
AhaManu.

Middle section: ( ok to read in voice over)

BRYIA

7 months later, community members, government leaders, and the businesses
who built the wind farm came together to celebrate the opening…

NADIA

In wasn’t a typical ribbon cutting, as almost everyone talked about the bigger
picture, what clean energy mean to Hawaii to our world and to all of us!

BRYIA

(Smiling) I hope you had as much fun as we did !

NADIA

We learned that Hawaii can become a model to the world on clean energy.

It is exciting to know that sustainability is a wind of positive change that will blow
into our future!

BRYIA and NADIA

I’m Bryia Keliikuli, and I’m Nadia Fale, covering for Kahuku Film Club, Aloha!

Aquaponics – step-by-step installation instructions

Aloha I’m Lani from Kahuku High and Intermediate school…today we are going to figure out how to put our first aquaponics system togther.

Aloha I’m ____________ as Lani was saying, we are going to be learning as we go.

An aquaponics system can provide a small family with plenty of fresh vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, onions, etc. (show carrot, onion, lettuce seed packets). You can also raise food fish such as Tilapia in a 300 gallon plastic fish tank.

To begin, let’s have a look at all of the components that make up an aquaponics system. (pan over all components)

Plastic table with a 2” hole in the middle and support legs
Plastic growbed with a 2” hole in the middle for drainage
A 90 watt submersible water pump
Clean gravel or ground volcanic ash
Auto-siphon and auto-siphon shield
PVC pipe to send water up to the PVC drainage assembly
Seedlings to plant in growbed
Talapia fish and fish food

    250 gallons of clean water

You will need a flat surface to put the entire aquaponics system on. The growbed I will be using will be very heavy with gravel and water so be sure it won’t tip over on an uneven surface. I decided to put the growbed under my roof so it can catch a little rainwater to save on my water bill. Aquaponic systems use 95% less water than dirt farms since the water is recycled.

Next, put the 300 gallon fish tank on a flat surface.

Next, I put a strong plastic table with 12 legs over the fish tank. Each PVC leg (explain what PVC stands for in subtitles – PVC Pipe – Polyvinyl chloride pipe, a common plastic pipe used for water distribution) has a cover to protect and strengthen it. Again, make sure the table is level over the fish tank.

Next, place the plastic growbed on top of the table and position the drain in the middle above the hole in the middle of the table so the water can drain properly. Put the black plastic ring into the hole in the center of the table so it can be connected to the 2” drain pipe.

Put the auto-siphon above the table drain. Place the auto-siphon shield above the hole to keep the gravel and roots away from the auto-siphon.

Put the 2” PVC pipe under the table so it empties into the fish tank.

Fill the fish tank with 250 gallons of water. Put the submersible water pump on the bottom of the fish tank on one side of the tank. Make sure you attach the filter to protect the pump. Connect the 1” PVC pipe to the water pump up to the drainage assembly.

Go ahead and turn on the water pump and watch how the water circulates throughout the system. Make sure there are no leaks and make sure you are completely satisfied with the location of the system because once you add the gravel to the growbed, your system will become very heavy and will be impossible to move without removing all the gravel and water.

Once you are completely satisfied with the setup, then you can go ahead and glue all the pipes with PVC glue you can purchase at any hardware store.

If your pump is pumping too fast it fills and overflows too quickly and then overflows. Make sure the auto-siphon drains your growbed every 20 minutes or so.

You can adjust the water flow from the pump with these two hand levers. Once everything all the components are glued together, you can begin adding washed gravel (I personally used ground up volcanic ash). Make sure there is no residue dust in the gravel.

You should not add the fish to the tank right away if you used tap water since it contains fluoride. I would wait two days before adding the fish.

Go ahead and start adding your seedlings into the rocks.

If the cost of electricity to run the water pump is too high, you may want to consider purchasing a photovoltaic system to power the water pump which normally costs around $300.

After 4 to 5 weeks, you should be able to harvest your lettuce and other plants. It takes about 8 months for the Tilapia to grow to adult size. You can feed your fish duckweed, goldfish food, strawberries, earthworms, etc.

You can slowly add more fish and plants to your system as it matures.

Have fun and good luck!

Update on Media Coaching from Producer Sue Yim at PBS, HIki No:

Hi Don,

Your students have the elements for a wonderful story! As you said on the phone, they just have to focus on the

story they want to tell.

Here’s advice your students may find helpful from one of Hawaii’s finest directors, Roy Kimura, who worked with some of the schools on Team 5 for next week’s show:

Always ask yourself these questions…

*What is it about this story that makes it compelling to you?

*What is it about this story that will make it compelling to your audience?

*What can be stripped away to make your story more direct, more efficient, and easier to understand?

*What is the one thing that you want your audience to take away after they’ve viewed your story?

I’ll ask Robert if he wants to email you suggestions. Meanwhile, don’t wait, please have your students continue editing toward a 3-minute story.

You have until Friday to deliver the final version. We’d like to see a 2nd rough cut on Monday or Tuesday.

Many thanks,

Sue Yim
